Skidding on my knees… //
Monday, November 16th, 2009

When I was a little kid skidding on my knees to ‘when I’m 64’ at the school disco, I thought people raved about The Beatles because they wrote loads of hit records. When listening to ‘a day in the life’ and ’strawberry fields’ when I was a bit older I discovered why I and countless others will rave inwardly to their music forevermore. They were absolute masters and revolutionaries at using the studio as an instrument. They were flag carriers for experimentalism in a mainstream setting. If only more people did that these days we’d be far less bound to the x-factor regime.

There are of course plenty of people out there carrying the can and making genre-bending, experimental music. However, bringing such an approach to the mainstream seems to be a far bigger task in today’s socio-cultural setting than it was back in the day of The Beatles. In the words of Elbow’s Guy Garvey, ”I think we dropped the baton like the ’60s didn’t happen”. Elbow have been experimenting whilst making stunning, infectious music for the last 10 years but it is only testament to their perseverance and love of music that they stuck around long enough to force themselves into mainstream consciousness last year on the back of a Mercury Music prize for ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ and its flagship single ‘one day like this’.

Anyway to get to the point of the post, when stumbling through Soundcloud the other day I saw this:

The Beatles – A Day In The Life (unknown mix) by Sei A

It of course intrigued me and I didn’t know what to expect. The remix made me think. ‘Sei A’ has stuck to The Beatles experimentalist mantra and the results are fantastically rewarding.
